This and that

I intended to write more this week but I just haven't been feeling myself. I don't know why. I think I'm really sick of Larry working so much. We are both sick of it. I'm glad he has a three day weekend coming up.

Nothing new really going on over here. Maddy went to see Wall-E. I hear it doesn't have much talking in it, so I'm curious to see if she liked it. Doesn't sound like her kind of movie. She's big on talking. But I hear it's good, so we'll see.

Connor stopped calling me "Mommy" and now just calls me "Mom". Which makes me laugh cause he's so little, and that is so grown up. He has been sleeping better since I put him back in his crib. I would say we are almost caught up. He's been waking up soaking wet at 6:30 every day so I need to do something about that. Maybe if I can keep him dry he will start sleeping til 7 or later. That would be awesome. One problem is that they don't make the Huggies overnight diapers in size 6. So he is still wearing size 5 in them and they are getting too small. Maybe I should just switch to regular Huggies and see how that goes. They do make those in size 6.

Two steps forward, one step back

So I bought Connor some underwear. Oh, so cute! And he loves them. They had Cars, Thomas, Elmo, and something else, I can't remember. Anyways, Larry held up the four packs so Connor could pick which ones he liked. He picked Cars and Thomas. And he's so proud of them.

We came home from the store and put them on right away. And he immediately peed in them. So we sat on the potty and then put on a clean pair. And then he did it again. But after that he got the hang of it and we've had very few accidents since then.

So those are our two steps forward. Underwear and the ability to use it properly.

Our one step back in on the sleeping front. Remember how I said that he has been waking up earlier and earlier everyday? Well, it hasn't gotten much better. He's been getting up at about 5:30am. Which is too early for him, and me. We are both miserable. And for Connor being over tired is a recipe for disaster. The less he sleeps, the less he sleeps. So it's imperative that I get him to sleep later, and take a better nap. I think that's what started us on this road of misery in the first place. For some reason he started pooping everyday at 1:00pm which is right in the middle of his nap. It wakes him up. So he wasn't taking proper naps, which means he wasn't sleeping well at night. Add all that to the fact that he recently started sleeping in a big boy bed and it equals him in our room at 5 in the morning.

So where's the one step back? I've decided to put him back in his crib. He is currently sleeping there now. Sigh. This morning he woke up at 5:30 just a tired little crab apple. I made him stay in his bed til 6:00 (which consists of me standing outside his door and sending him back to bed every 2 minutes). So finally I gave up and we went downstairs to say good by to Larry. About 10 minutes later Connor asks to go to bed. "Please night night, Momma". So I put him back down. I stood at his door and sent him back to his bed until 6:30, when I finally gave up. So we went downstairs to have breakfast.

When he finished his breakfast he just laid on the couch and watched tv. Which is totally not like him. He kept saying "Please night night" but I didn't want to spend our whole day getting mad at each other in his doorway, so I told him we would later. I didn't believe that this time he was really going to fall asleep.

So finally by 7:30 he was just a disaster. The boy needed to sleep! He wanted to sleep. He just wouldn't lay in his bed. The world is too exciting to just lay in a dark room. Or maybe his mattress is spring loaded and it was just shooting him right out. I don't know.

So we spent another 15 minutes playing our little game when finally I had had enough. I went and got his crib and stuck him in it. He cried for about one minute and then I heard him saying "pacifier! pacifier!" So I went in and gave him back his binky, laid him down, and left. I haven't heard a sound out of him since. Oh thank heaven!

Longest day

I don't know if I mentioned this but starting about two weeks ago Connor started waking up earlier and earlier and earlier. We have tried everything we can think of. Putting him to bed later, putting him to bed earlier, putting tinfoil over the window, blocking the crack under the door, forcing him to lay in bed until a reasonable time.... but nothing is working. For the past year or so he has been waking up between 7 and 8. Totally respectable times to wake up. But then it started. 6:50, 6:45, 6:30, 6:15, 6:00, 5:50, 5:30, 5:15, then yesterday 5:06. Today:4:50. Seriously, when will it stop? Just when I think it can't possibly get any earlier, it does. So while this is the longest day of the year, it is also the longest day of my life.

To make matters worse, Larry has been working 6 days a week for the past few weeks. Which means that I have to get up with Connor every. single. day. I can't, with good conscious, say to Larry... "Hey, thanks for working 16 hour days 6 days a week for the past two weeks, but can you watch the kids.... cause I'm pooped." As tired as I am, he is way more tired. And I can take a nap.

But on a positive note: The day I've been waiting for for 2 years finally arrived. Connor came running into the living room totally butt naked. lol. I knew it would happen someday. I could tell he would be the kind of kid that just strips naked on a whim. But yesterday there was a purpose for the stripping. He needed to go potty. A few days ago he decided he was interested in potty training. Then yesterday he was determined to figure it out. He actually went a couple of hours without a diaper on. He would come and tell me he had to pee, I would put him on the potty, and he would actually pee. It was amazing. There was only one accident and that was while he was eating lunch.

Even when he was wearing a diaper he would take it off and ask for the potty. I would say he went probably 10 times or more. He was really loving it. Now if we could get a poop on the potty, that would be awesome.

It's a pink and purple mitten.

Ok, this is the last time I'm going to write about Maddy's baseball adventures, I promise. But I have a few more examples that illustrate the total girlishness that is my daughter.

First off, on the second day of baseball she came trotting into my room wearing a skirt. Um... sweetie, you can't wear a skirt to baseball. Then the next day at dinner she is telling Larry about what they did at baseball and I can't remember her exact words, but she called her glove her mitten. Her mitten. lol. I about fell out of my chair. Even last night I was laying in bed trying to fall asleep and it popped into my head and I couldn't stop laughing. I was just laying there in the dark giggling to myself. hehehe... mitten. Even now it's cracking me up.

Then yesterday was the last day and as we were getting out of the car she was complaining that she had to catch a ball on the ground and she got her glove dirty. lol... oh no! She got her baseball mitten dirty...of all the horrors!

Connor on the other hand is currently jumping around the family room with both feet in a bucket. I don't see how that could possibly end badly.

Big Squirt

So baseball went much better today. She had a lot of fun. I didn't hang around because of the heat, but she happy when I picked her up. For one thing today they had a big hose out on the field and were wetting the kids down. I'm sure that helped everyone's mood.

While we were waiting for it to end this guy pulled up in a green tractor and stopped it right in front of us. Which was pretty much the coolest thing ever. He let Connor sit on it and was going to turn it on for him and show him how to make the thing go up and down but Connor got kinda freaked out and just wanted to sit on it. Which was fine, it was still cool.

And then as all the kids were leaving the guy with the tractor turned on some sprinklers. Not garden sprinklers, real heavy duty baseball field sprinklers. Connor wanted to go get wet, so I said ok. I wasn't looking but Connor started crying. So I go over there and he is soaking wet. I said "Did you get a big squirt?" And through the tears he said "Yeah, big squirt!"

Oh speaking of Connor, at 5:15 this morning he came in our room, flipped on the light, and said "all done sleeping". Not fun. We are assuming he is getting up so early because it's getting light so early. I think we might put something over his window to keep the light out. You know, other than the heavy dark curtain that is already there. I just wish he would sleep later than the crack of dawn.

Baseball

Maddy had baseball camp today. She was sooo excited to go. We signed her up because of a flier we got with her school papers during the last week of school. Whenever we get something like that I ask her if she wants to do it. I try not to discourage her from trying something. She said she wanted to go. So we signed her up and she exclaimed "I'm going to be the best basketball player in the whole world!" lol. Wrong sport honey, but good attitude.

So we pull up this morning and right away I knew this wasn't a very good idea. All the kids walking up were in full on baseball gear. Baseball pants, baseball shirts, cleats, hats, bat bags, water jugs, everything. Maddy was wearing a pink tank top and a pair of capris. Even the moms were hard core.

Anways, it started at 7:30 in the morning and it wasn't too bad, temperature wise. But it it got hot quick. I knew she was hating it out there in the blazing sun. It's supposed to be 115 today, so even at 8:00 in the morning it's still pretty hot. Probably over 100. They had them line up and do different things. Maddy was always last to go and she was hilarious. She is not coordinated at all. The other moms around me were cracking up watching her. I didn't mention that she was mine. lol. They weren't being mean, just saying how cute she was and laughing and laughing. It was pretty funny so I couldn't blame them. I don't know what else happened. I didn't really watch the whole thing, by about 8:15 I pretty much wanted to die it was so hot.

So when it finally ended she came slooooowly walking over to where the moms were waiting and I walked out to meet her.

"Did you have fun?!" I said, trying to sound upbeat but knowing full well she didn't.
"Yeah."
"You did?"
"Yeah, tomorrow I want to bring some water though"
"Yeah, I forgot water today. Tomorrow we will for sure." But I was thinking... "You are actually coming back tomorrow?"
"So were there any other girls?"
"No. And everyone was all 'oooohhh... a girl!'"
"Oh yeah, was that fun?"
"No, I felt embarrassed."
"Oh, I'm sorry. But you still had fun?"
"I had a little bit of fun, but it was all hot and sweaty. Do I have to come back?"
"Well, we signed up for 4 days."
"4 days!"
"Yeah, that means you have 3 days left."
"Oh, I don't think I want to come back."

So I don't know. I want her to still go, but I'm not surprised she doesn't want to go back. I can't say I would. So I'll probably let her quit. I think she should give it another chance, but I'm not going to force her. I didn't think she was going to be the best basketball player in the world anyways.

Update: She did go back today. I didn't influence her either way and she decided on her own she wanted to go back. I admire her bravery, I really do.

Musings

So I don't know if I mentioned it or not but Maddy is home from her dad's. I don't know what to do with myself, having both kids all day everyday. If I do something with Maddy, Connor is in the middle of it. If I do something with Connor, Maddy is the middle of it. If I do something with both of them, they fight. So what am I supposed to do? I'll tell you what, lay on the couch with a pillow over my head, that's what.

Connor hasn't been sleeping well so he is a total grump. Everything cause a meltdown. Everything. We are in full blown terrible two's around here. He wants to do everything himself but he's still too little to do very much. So I have to help him without him seeing me. Like I pull the back of his pants up while he pulls up the front. But I can't let him know it. If he catches me then he cries because he wanted to do it.

He actually asked to be put on the potty last night. So I did, and he peed. Which was awesome! He didn't want his diaper put back on so I let him go around with just a T-shirt on. Babies look so cute like that... with their little butts peeking out from under a shirt. hehe. But he quickly peed on the rug. Which was ok with me, but he he got very upset by it. He immediately wanted to be put back on the potty. Which we did. And then for like an hour afterwards he kept pointing to the spot and saying "pee rug". It really bothered him. Which is cool. After Maddy is back at school we are going to get ourselves into some hard core potty training.

The dentist

We went to the dentist yesterday. Maddy and I both had appointments. I took Connor with us. Which probably wasn't the best idea to begin with. I don't know what I was thinking. It's been a while since I had a cleaning. I guess I forgot how long it takes.

Overall they were pretty good. My appointment took an hour and a half, so considering that I would say they were good. Not perfect, slightly embarrassing, but overall pretty good. I was surprised how much parenting I was able to do without being able to see them or speak. I just laid there staring at the ceiling and listening to them. A snap of the fingers and a stern point to their chairs was actually working. Then out of the corner of my eye I saw sock go flying across the room. That's when I knew I was in trouble. It was the only time I had to stop the appointment and lay the smack down.

But even with them mostly sitting in their chairs and not touching anything they were so loud. Maddy didn't stop talking once the whole time we were there. And the rooms aren't private, there were tall half walls between each chair, so everyone in the whole office could hear everything. Which wasn't cool. Even when Maddy went to her appointment, which was on the other side of the office I could still hear her talking. "I brush my teeth everyday. I do such a good job. I have a spongebob toothbrush. I have my very own toothpaste. There is a new Toy Story coming out when I'm 8. I can't wait for 1st grade!" and on and on. I don't know how they even got a peek into her mouth.

I'm sure they were happy to see us leave so their office could return to the serene workplace it normally is.

Connor do it!

Connor's new thing is "Momma look at me!" or "Look at this!" and then when I look he does some new dare devil thing. Not really dare devilish in the grand scheme of things but pretty daring for him. Like walking with one foot on the ground and one foot on the curb. Or maybe spinning around on one foot.

He is turning into such a little boy. He is obsessed with dressing himself. He is an expert on putting on his shoes and is starting to get the hang of putting his shorts on. He did it twice today. Usually he puts both legs in one leg hole but today he did it right. Then he pulled up the zipper and tried to the snap but couldn't. He tried hard though. Then I showed him and he unsnapped it and tried again. He is a determined little bugger. He never did get it.

Dr visit

I took Connor to the dr on Monday night to have his ears looked at. He'd had a runny nose for a few days and he always gets and ear infection if he gets a runny nose. He woke up from his nap in a horrible mood, crying over every little thing. But of course as soon as I call the dr he turns right around and is his normal sweet self. OF COURSE! But I took him to the drs anyways because I still wanted a trained professional to take a peek. He never has any real symptoms of an ear infection, so the nurse always makes me feel crazy. As I'm leaving the office with my prescription I want to waive it in the nurses face with an "I told you so!"

But guess what?! No ear infection. In fact the dr said his ears were perfect. Did ya'll hear that? PERFECT! No one has ever said that before. Even when he didn't have an ear infection they would always say "Well, he has a little fluid in his right ear but it looks clear." But they've never said perfect. yay! It was worth the copay just to hear those words. Let me say it again: His ears are perfect.

We went up to the pool today. The pool has 4 gates, 3 of which are locked or welded shut. I guess keeping all 4 gates functional was just too much. Anyways, so we go up there and walk all the way around the pool to the one open gate and it's locked. I was soooo bummed. And my heart was breaking for Connor. He looked so cute shirtless with his Spiderman bathing suit, sunglasses, and carrying his fun noodle. I couldn't possibly tell him he couldn't go swimming. So we walk through the bushes over to the next gate, welded shut. So we go around to the other side of the pool to the third gate and it was open! yay! I was so happy. He was such a good boy. Just following me around. Trying to get through all those bushes with that great big noodle. Such a sweet boy.
