The week in review

Crap! It's been a week since I wrote in here. Dang it. I don't know how time gets away from me.

Let's see, what did I do this week... I can't even remember. My life is like a bucking bronco and I'm just trying not to get trampled. In fact, I've fallen off but my foot got caught in the reigns and I'm being wildly thrown around like a rag doll. Occasionally my head hits the ground and I pass out for a few minutes. That must have been what happened this week. Cause seriously, I thought I was writing every day. lol.

Anyways, so this week...

Monday: I made lasagna. Oh, no wait... that was two weeks ago. I don't remember Monday at all except that I had a math test.

Tuesday: I went to the post office and then out to lunch with Connor. Don't remember much else.

Wednesday: I met Larry for lunch, talked to Nikki, and then did homework. Maddy came home from school bawling her eyes out because she picked out an AR book that was the wrong level. (AR is the advanced reading program. You read a book, then take a comprehension test on it. When you pass 3 tests then you move up to the next level. She is now in level 2.1. That's second grade, ya'll!) I tried to explain that it wasn't a big deal and that I'm sure she could trade it for another book in the right level. She said there was no way she could at all and that she is the only kid who has ever picked a book in the wrong level and she will have to go to another school in order to fix this problem, as it is the worst thing a student could ever do. She literally cried for about an hour over this. Got her calmed down and then went to school.

Turns out that it's not a big deal and you can, in fact, exchange the book for one in the proper level.

Thursday: I went to Target and then stopped at Quiznos so that I could use my coupon for a free sub. Yum. That's basically it.

Friday: So far nothing. I do need to go to Walmart and pick up some pictures I ordered and then come home and fill my collage frames and then rehang all my pictures. Last week we got the super idea to move the computer upstairs. This seemingly simple move has affected every room in the house except for Maddy's room. No joke! We moved the computer into the closet of the spare room. Which meant emptying the closet. Which meant moving everything either into the garage or into the closet in the master. Which meant reorganizing the master closet. I found a bunch of stuff that should be in Connor's closet, which meant reorganizing that.

So then finally the computer goes upstairs. Which left a big gaping hole in the living room. So we needed to move the TV. Which left that wall VERY bare. So we moved a book case from the living room into the family room. Which meant reorganizing the DVDs. And the point of moving the computer was to have all the officey type stuff in one place. Which most of that was in the hall closet. So that got reorganized as well.

Oh and somewhere in there I decided to buy a new light fixture for the downstairs bathroom.

But it was all worth it. Not only does the house look nicer now, I can actually use the computer without Connor sitting on my lap and putting his big round fuzzy head right in the way. Or better, standing behind the chair and turning it back and forth. Or even better yet, slapping at the keyboard and making all kinds of weird changes that I didn't even know you could do, let alone how to fix.

A helper in training

Connor is "doing the dishes" as I type. I have the faucet dripping the tiniest drip it can manage and luckily he isn't tall enough yet to reach the handle so he has to deal with it. I probably shouldn't let him do this but how can a person resist when your three year old ASKS to do the dishes. This is an activity that simply must be encouraged.

He then got the sponge and was "cleaning the table". Which means dragging a sopping wet sponge across the island. He is too short to actually see over the counter so he has no idea that he is really just getting my grocery store ads all wet. But it's sweet.

LOL... He just wiped pretend sweat off his brow and said "phew!". Then while standing on his stool turned to look at me. This allowed him to see the top of the island that he just cleaned. Seeing the puddles of water that he left during his cleaning spree he says, "Wait a minute?! The table is all wet!". He then got down, got a dish towel, and dried of the counter.

"I'm doing great, Mommy!"
"You are doing great."

Just do it!

This is an excerpt from a book called Art and Fear by David Bayles and Ted Orland.

The ceramics teacher announced on opening day that he was dividing the class into two groups. All those on the left side of the studio, he said, would be graded solely on the quantity of work they produced, all those on the right solely on its quality. His procedure was simple: on the final day of class he would bring in his bathroom scales and weigh the work of the "quantity" group: fifty pound of pots rated an "A", forty pounds a "B", and so on. Those being graded on "quality", however, needed to produce only one pot -- albeit a perfect one -- to get an "A". Well, came grading time and a curious fact emerged: the works of highest quality were all produced by the group being graded for quantity. It seems that while the "quantity" group was busily churning out piles of work - and learning from their mistakes -- the "quality" group had sat theorizing about perfection, and in the end had little more to show for their efforts than grandiose theories and a pile of dead clay.

Think about it...

Oh, and by the way... I went to the post office today and have nothing to report. Strange.

Progress report

Maddy got a progress report today.

Reading: 97.5% (A+)
Math: 97.2% (A+)
Writing: 96.2% (A)

That's my girl!! Her teacher wrote "Maddy is a good student." I'm so proud.

But I can't say much because I, myself, have a test tonight. And I can't let my 7 year old show me up! Off to work...

And that's what you get

I've been meaning to tell you this story since we got back from Disneyland but I keep forgetting...

When we were at Disneyland we had pulled over to the side to sit for a moment and have some snacks. Our table happened to be right next to a drinking fountain, or bubbla as they say back home. Since Connor is 3 and can't actually sit and eat a meal without getting up 100 times he was taking a bite of his snack and then going over and playing with the water. Fine, whatever.

We are sitting there eating and Larry looks over at him and sternly says "Connor! Don't do that.". I look over and Connor has his thumb over the hole where the water comes out and is about to push the button. Connor gives him a defiant look, pushes the button, and shot of water went right in his eye. LOL. Me and Larry just about died laughing. Connor was on the verge of being upset, but when me and Larry broke up he just started laughing too. Larry just said "See... I told you not to push it!"

Rearranging

Ok, I'm a bad girl. I completely spaced on writing in here yesterday. Sorry. So much for my challenge.

We have decided to move the computer upstairs. We kinda went back and forth about where to put it. I refuse to put it in the bedroom. I just don't like that. I barely tolerate having a TV in there, I am NOT putting the computer in there too. Not. Gunna. Do it.

Ok, so the spare room is the next obvious choice. But the elliptical machine is in there which makes the room kinda awkward. We could fit the computer but it would look like poo.

The closet in the spare room is a walk in with, get this... a window. Yeah, there's a window in the closet. So we've decided to put the computer in there. It's the walk in closet in the spare room. I'm sure you can imagine how much clutter has accumulated in there. So all that junk has to find a new home. And that's what I've been doing this weekend. Moving the stuff from this closet to other closets. So I don't only have to declutter this one closet but just about every closet in the house. Fun.

Larry has gotten in on the act by condensing his movies from 4 bookcases to 3. Go him! We are going to move the now empty bookcase up to the spare room for more storage in there.

Sounds good right? Well it does create a couple of problems. Problems I'm afraid are going to cost money to fix.

The first problem is that moving the computer will leave a big clean spot on the rug. Gross, I know. But we put the plastic rug protector thing down under the computer chair when we moved in.... 4 1/2 years ago. Since then the rest of the rug has received quite a beating. So when we move it I'm afraid the condition of the rug is going to be extremely obvious. But nothing a professional steam cleaning won't fix.

The second problem is that moving the computer is going to leave a big empty spot in the room. Right now we have the TV hanging on the wall Dr. office style. Which I've hated since the day we put it up there. We could get an entertainment center type thing and put the TV on it. Which I think will look nicer... but it's money spent.

So that's how we have been spending our weekend.

Can it!

We got a new trash can yesterday. (Hey, if I'm committed to writing every day you can't expect them all to be interesting!) Connor promised me that he wouldn't break this one. How nice of him.

The weird thing is that we have been in the market for a new trash can for quite some time. I just couldn't make a decision on the matter. The truth is that I would like a nice high quality, non plastic one. But I can not bring myself to spend $100 on a trash can. A TRASH CAN! A can in which to place my trash. I mean really. I can't do it. Even as it was I could hardly bring myself to put that first piece of trash in my nice new clean and shiny $17 plastic trash can.

It's pretty, even if it is plastic. It's black, so hopefully you won't be able to see every little piece of crud and junk that gets into the crevices. Like you could the old one. I really did clean it, every time I mopped in fact. Not that you could tell.

It's funny all the different kinds of trash cans. I remember growing up we had a little can under the sink. Mel had an outside type trash can, like the kind you take to the curb, in her kitchen. What the heck kind of bag did they use? The thing must have weighed a ton! Anyways, some people just use a plastic shopping bag hanging on a door knob, or a garbage bag lying on the floor. I've been in houses like that. Anyways, it interesting. Well... maybe interesting is too strong a word. It's curious.

Warts and all

If you are wondering why I'm wearing duct tape on my foot, it's because my doctor told me to. haha. No joke.

I went to the doctor today to have a wart on my foot frozen off. Gross, I know. I can only assume that I got it at the pool, cause when else do I walk around barefoot in public? Did you know that the wart virus can live on a surface for months?! Dang.

First my doc gave it a few shots of liquid nitrogen, which really does hurt as much as it seems like it would. Then she said to put duct tape on the wart and keep it in the dark. Which I had read about the duct tape treatment online but I thought it was a joke. I tucked that little gem along side soaking it in 113 degree water for 30 minutes to 2 hours and rubbing a rag on it and then burying the rag in the backyard.

But here I sit with duct tape taped to the bottom of my foot. I hope it works. She said that the nitrogen makes the wart more obvious to my immune system so my body will fight it. And then the duct tape keeps the wart from getting some nutrients that it needs. I'm not really sure what keeping it in the dark does. But I'm supposed to keep the lights off when I change the tape. lol. I didn't ask what I should do when I take a shower.

Here are some other weird wart treatments...
Hypnosis (you are getting sleepy...)
Beetle Juice (paint the wart with beetle juice and then cover with clear tape)
Tea Tree Oil (Sounds like a drink)
Banana Peel (lmao)
Poison Oak Juice ( I don't see how this would help.)
Rubbing it with a coin and then throwing the coin away. (You keep the wart and lose the coin)
Rub the wart on the father of an illegitimate child. (I think I have one of those lying around. lol)

A challenge: day 1

I'm going to challenge myself to write here everyday for a week. I haven't forgot about you, I've just been super busy and kinda stressed out. And I hate writing nothing but posts about how yucky things are right now. I mean, you don't want to read that. (and I don't want to write it.)

Sooo....

Hmm... Connor got his hair cut yesterday. So cute! I love him with a brand new hair cut. "Mommy, touch my hair cut." He looks so big. Maddy was all jealous that I let him eat his lollipop in the car on the way home. She wasn't even there and she was jealous about it. *eyeroll*

Valentines day is coming up. You doing anything? I think we are going to cook salmon on the grill (YUM!) and spend a nice night at home. Doing what? I don't know. Something out of the ordinary. ANYTHING out of the ordinary. Maybe we will have a pretend black out. That fits in nicely with cooking on the grill. I'll have to pretend to have a gas stove so I can cook some rice. Hey, I mean, if we are already pretending.

I think I'm also going to get Maddy something for Valentines day. I don't normally do that, but I think she will like it. She's a big fan of this holiday. I don't know what yet... I'll go peruse the holiday aisles at Walmart and see what they have. Something cheap and cheesy will be perfect. And bake some heart shaped cookies of course!

Anyways... see you tomorrow.

a trip to the post office

Every time I go to the post office I end up writing about it. Maybe that's why they call it the post office. Because that's where you go to get post ideas. To the office of posts.

I thought I had a relatively simple thing to do. I thought the line would be short. I thought I would be in and out. Oh how wrong I was...

I went to the post office yesterday to rent a PO Box. I could do it online, but you still need to go down there and pick up the keys, so I figured I would just do the whole thing in person. I thought it would be easier. ha ha.

I get there and there is a 7 person line. Longer than I was expecting but there were two tellers so no big deal. Well, about 35 seconds later the lady teller begins processing a passport. Yeah, a passport! Complete with taking their picture and everything. I slowly make my way to the front of the line and tell the guy I need to rent a PO Box and hand him my application.

Blank stare.

I explain again that I need a PO Box.

He gets a panicked look and starts fiddling with my application. "umm.... umm... uhhh... I don't know how to do these. You will have to wait for her (the teller doing the passport). I'm sure she will be just a few minutes." Ok, fine. I step to the side... and wait... and wait... and wait.

I'm not kidding you.... an hour later I get my turn. A fricken hour!! It was waaaay past lunch time and Connor had long since worn out his welcome.

Which brings me to another point. Normally in public I try to make Connor stay near me, be fairly quiet, stand up, not touch things, ect. You know... I make him behave. But the longer I stood there the more lax I became. After 15 minutes I let him talk to strangers. After 30 mintues I didn't stop him from wandering around. After 45 minutes I allowed him to play with the postal scale. After 60 minutes I turned away while he made dirt angels on the floor. That's when I knew things had gone horribly awry.

The last of the twos

It's Connor's birthday tomorrow!! Well, probably today by the time you read this. I can't believe he is 3! And oh so proud of it.

"What's your name?"
"Connor"
"How old are you Connor?"
"2"
"Nope, you're 3!"
"I'm 3 olds?!"
"Yup!"
"How old are you?"
"I don't know"
"You're 3!"
"I AM 3!"
"How old are you?"
"I'm 3! With the birthday cake!"

Yes, a homemade birthday cake. And it's not quite right. It's from a box so I'm not sure how I screwed it up. But boy, take two bites and you start to feel sick. Seriously. Larry and I each ate it twice and then noticed the pattern. But I simply can't throw it away. Connor is so proud of it. "It's my birthday cake!" So I don't know. After his birthday is over I will have no choice, but for now. I just keep making up excuses why we can't eat it.

Well, things are looking up around here. Since last time I posted my woe is me post anyways. We know Larry isn't getting laid off, so that's good. His brothers are probably getting laid off though so that sucks for them. Larry is doing everything he can to try to find them work someplace else, but dang... there just isn't a lot of work to go around.

I also have something else in the works. If you know me in real life then you probably know what I'm talking about... I'm just not ready to say it out loud yet.
